Before the familiar hacker story

Technical communities developed their own languages and ways of learning. No single club, medium, or invention accounts for everything that followed.

A railway control room

The Tech Model Railroad Club describes a culture of practical experimentation around model-railway controls and computing. Its System 3 history describes reuse of telephone equipment. That is a documented material connection; it is not evidence that the equipment came from dumpster diving. The club’s account of its place in hacker language should be attributed to the club, rather than treated as an uncontested universal origin.

Words and artifacts

Peter Samson’s 1959 dictionary preserves how a particular community described itself. Reading that document beside a later Phrack issue is an editorial comparison of technical cultures, not proof of a direct chain of influence. The archive links the artifacts and the people without inventing missing connections.
