Phone phreaking: learning the network

Telephone experimentation is a central thread here, with earlier engineering and later computing connections kept in view.

Networks as objects of study

The historical record includes public Bell technical literature, contemporary journalism, and surviving devices. These are different kinds of evidence. A technical journal documents a published system description; a magazine report records interviews and the reporter’s framing; a museum object documents an artifact and its provenance. None should be silently substituted for another.

A bridge into personal computing

A surviving Wozniak blue box and the Homebrew/Apple-1 record provide concrete connections between telephone experimentation and personal-computing hardware. They support specific artifact and participant histories, not a claim that all personal computing descended from phreaking. This archive does not reproduce toll-fraud instructions or historical personal phone directories.
